ScriptShark's Manuscript Coverage Service FAQ [+]
Why would I want to pay anyone to evaluate my work?
Honest feedback is an invaluable tool for any writer, novice or professional. We find that many writers have people who are more than happy to read their work: Their parents. Their partners. Their friends. However, personal relations will rarely tell you what they really think of your work, even if they are capable of reading your manuscript with a discerning industry eye. Unbiased, constructive coverage from a professional analyst allows you to receive sober and insightful evaluation from an individual vested in nothing but the improvement of your material.
Why should I get coverage before I send my manuscript to agents?
ScriptShark's coverage prepares the writer for the industry by providing industry-caliber coverage from professional industry analysts, the same sort of professional who would analyze and "cover" your manuscript in any agency that you would send your manuscript to.
If I purchase a Manuscript Coverage, how do I qualify for scouting?
As in the industry, ScriptShark grades each one of the manuscripts that go through its coverage services with one of the industry-standard ratings.
Those ratings are:
Pass
Pass w/ Reservations
Consider w/ Reservations
Consider
Recommend
These ratings can be found on the last page of your coverage, following the Comments section. Should your manuscript receive a Consider w/ Reservations or above, the manuscript will qualify for our scouting services.
To learn more, go to our Scouting page.
Is it difficult to receive a Consider or Recommend?
ScriptShark is always in search of strong material. However, because agents and managers trust us to provide them with industry-ready material every single time, we are committed to putting only the highest-caliber material out there, and request our analysts to be as demanding of our writers as they would be of writers working in the industry today. This is the only way that we can maintain our stellar reputation, as well as provide you, the writer, with direct access to agents and managers who trust that any manuscript coming from Scriptshark will be worth their while. However, it is important to remember that only 2-5% of manuscripts that go through our coverage services qualify for scouting.
How do I know you're not giving my manuscript a Pass just so I'll spend more money?
ScriptShark's entire reputation is built on discovering new talent. Therefore, we are hoping for a Consider with every screenplay and manuscript that comes through our doors. Unfortunately, most of the manuscripts and screenplays we receive are not ready for the industry when they first arrive at Scriptshark. Nonetheless, our success is dependant on the success of our writers. Therefore, it is in our best interest to help you develop your manuscript to a Consider level, so that we may scout it to agents and managers, and maintain our reputation for locating new and exciting talent.
What if I don't agree with ScriptShark's coverage?
As the writer of the material, you are its champion. No one, no matter how much they like or dislike the material, will ever have your same exact vision of it. Therefore, it is rare that a writer agrees or disagrees with their coverage from beginning to end. It is your job as the writer to identify the comments and suggestions that may assist you in strengthening your vision and crystallizing your manuscript, and discard others which do not serve the story that you feel passionate to tell. As a rule of thumb, and whether comments are given by ScriptShark analysts or a room full of agents, we find that a writer usually accepts approx. 70% of suggestions, while 30% are discarded.
