ScriptShark's Film Treatment Notes Service FAQ  [+]

How long should my treatment be?
In order to provide our analysts enough information about your story or movie concept, we request that your treatment be no less than 4 pages. It's important that you develop your material as much as possible before submitting, so that the treatment is as complete as could be when our analysts receive it.

Do I have to write a treatment before I write a screenplay?
No. However, many writers find it helpful to compose either a treatment, a beat-sheet or a step-outline prior to writing the screenplay, which will later help to keep them on course. Additionally, a treatment, beat-sheet or a step-outline will often allow the writer to detect problems in the work and resolve them before the idea ever makes it to screenplay form.

How come treatments are not eligible for scouting?
What agents and managers are looking for are skilled writers, who display their craft in the execution of their screenplay. A treatment, no matter how promising, is only an idea, and should not be seen as a prime example of the writer's talents.

What format should my treatment be in?
Unlike a screenplay, which is specifically structured, a treatment does not have a specific format. Treatments are ordinarily written in prose and range from ten to twenty pages. However, treatments come in all shapes and sizes. You can synopsize your story into a narrative structure or you can just plainly outline your three acts, plots, sub-plots, characters, conflicts, etc.

Should I include dialogue in my treatment?
Treatments should keep dialogue to a minimum.

Are treatments easy to sell to Hollywood?
Treatments are very difficult for a writer without a track record in Hollywood to sell. First-time screenwriters will find it easier to sell a completed screenplay. The reality is that treatments, ideas, and pitches tend to only sell if they come from an established talent (writer, director, actor).
